Combating Loneliness and
Building Community

Recently, the Surgeon General released an advisory calling attention to the public health crisis of loneliness, isolation, and lack of connection. “Our epidemic of loneliness and isolation has been an underappreciated public health crisis that has harmed individual and societal health.” U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, on May 3, 2023.

Loneliness is a hidden epidemic that silently affects the lives of so many individuals, it can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, economic status, or cultural background. Peninsula Family Service (PFS) is focusing on enhancing programmatic solutions, while prioritizing care and connections to overcome loneliness in our communities. PFS programs and services for older adults include technology training, transportation, 1:1 mental health counseling, Peer Counseling opportunities, and an adult activity center.

The guest speaker for the 25th Anniversary of Holidays on a High Note is Dr. Ashwin Kotwal, who will talk about the complex challenge of loneliness and multi-faceted approaches we can take to prevent social isolation . Dr. Kotwal is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Geriatrics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. He devotes most of his time to research focusing on understanding and enhancing social connections of older adults to improve their quality of life and health care access. Dr. Kotwal’s research interests involve evaluation of community-based interventions to address loneliness and isolation, particularly among older adults with cognitive impairment or approaching the end of life.
